HAESENI NOBLE DIET

The Nobility of Haense dining together

The Haeseni Diet of 1759 was a jubilant event held by Prinzenas Tattiana of Alban. This is the first diet held since the passing of the Late Andrik IV.  The diet began with a feast and the traditional breaking of bread between the noble lords and the sovereign hosts. The topics remained on current events, mainly revolving around the lengthy ongoing conflict and inquiries on how the lands of the vassals such as Valwyk, Nenzing, and Reimar have fared. After the feast nobles were allowed to bring their grievances to the Crown. The Diet ended with Queen Mother Maya Valeriya Barbanov announcing the dissolution of St. Charles College and the formation of the Royal Academy of Saint Catherine. This Diet brought forth a sense of community and thoughtful conversation that is much needed in these times of hardships as the war continues to rage on. May the Crown and its nobility continue on with open communications for the months and years to come.

MEET THE VOLIKS

Outside of New Reza, Haense
A Sketch of Two Volik Clansmen at their Refugee Camp

For months now, news of the Haeseni Athera Expedition’s triumphant return has made headlines, arguably one of the proudest moments in the recent history of Haense.

Perhaps one of the most curious recent occurrences in the Kingdom of Haense is the arrival of the Volik Clan. The survivors of the senseless slaughter that the tribe was subjected to are mostly made up of women and children, but there are a few warriors among them who still yet live.

While undertaking research within the Kingdom of Haense for my highly anticipated ethnographic study, The Last Frontier, I encountered Torvald Volik, the Chief of the Volik Clan. Thrilled at the prospect of being able to interview a tribal chieftain that actually hails from the Atheran continent, I requested such of him, to which he wholeheartedly agreed.

It should be noted that our exchange took place over a Carrion Black at the Crow’s Hearth Inn, in a comfortable environment where the Chief might speak openly.

CELESTINE: “So, in short, might you be able to describe the meaning of Saint Karl in your culture, as well as the religion of the Voliks and how it distinguishes you from other tribes in the region?”

TORVALD VOLIK: “Well, truth be told, we were just like tae res’ o’ the Waldenians. We originally believed in tha pagan gods o’ Saventon, Tyrand Gonthorian as well as other such deities. Wha’ separated us from tae others es we converted after tha siege of Nerezza, which was tha original home o’ tae Voliks in Athera.”

CELESTINE: “I see.”

TORVALD VOLIK: “Well, we mostly converted tae Canonism anyways, some still continued tae practice tae old ways, but they died out after tae Volik schism in Vailor.”

CELESTINE: “A schism? Might you be able to elaborate upon the details behind this schism?”

TORVALD VOLIK: [He seems uncomfortable at the mention of the topic.] “Unfortunately, my bloodline kept only the records o’ tae Voliks before they left Athera. I have only been able tae gather bits of information about tha Voliks during the age o’ Vailor.”

CELESTINE: “Oh- Yes, right, of course. That is what I was primarily interested in anyways. My apologies, I get distracted rather easily.”

TORVALD VOLIK: “Nothin’ tae worry abou’.”

CELESTINE: “In any case. After the Haeseni left Siegrad, what was life like for your people?”

TORVALD VOLIK: “We stayed behind, honorin’ a debt that was held by my ancestor Horik Volik, after Lord Karl Barbanov was eaten by tha great worm. It was a hard time for us, as we had to stave off tha wildlings tha’ had resurged upon the departure from Old Haense.

We owed et tae Lord Barbanov, and to my ancestor’s debt, tae protect the Barbanov lands and honor the Crows.”
CELESTINE: “Would you mind telling me more about this ‘Bralt’ fellow and his tribe? I take it that he was one of your bitter rivals in Athera, was he not?”

TORVALD VOLIK: “Aye, Bralt was, and still es, a horrific enemy o’ tae Crow. We’d often figh’ for resources, although I mus’ admi’ et was a bit like being hunted by them due to their large numbers. However, I colud see Bralt just wanted tae lead his people out o’ tae shitehole tha’ his people were lef’ in, although tha means in which he tried to attempt this through were blacker than tha Crow’s darkest o’ days.”

CELESTINE: “What do you mean? ‘The means in which he tried to attempt this’… What sort of means, Chief Volik?”

continued…

Pg. 4

TORVALD VOLIK: “Huntin’ us like prey, and trying tae kill tha little King Crow, all fer a stupid prophesy! Tha’ es what I mean by the black methods he used.”

CELESTINE: “And how do you feel, now that you are back in Haense?”
TORVALD VOLIK: “Like being taken ou’ of yer time, and placed in another. Bu’ tae answer yer question, I feel uneasy. I am nae Horik Volik. Nor am I a descendant of his offspring that left with Haense tae go tae Vailor. I will always be loyal to the Crow, as every Volik will be, but adjustin’ will be hard. Yet we’ve been through worse, so we will find a way.”

CELESTINE: “What are some of the differences between your culture and that of the Haeseni that have developed? At least, that you’ve been able to observe thus far.”

TORVALD VOLIK: “Haense es as stubborn as tha cold winds tha’ plague tha northern climate: et rarely changes. Yet, society es more demoratic than before, which is unusual for us Voliks to see.”

CELESTINE: “Thank you for your time, Chief Volik!”

To summarize, the Voliks are a Canonist tribe of Atheran natives that professes absolute undying allegiance to the Crown of Haense, and thus safeguarded the ancient Barbanov lands and their treasures for centuries.

Several months after the transcription of this interview, the Chief once again swore his oaths to the House of Barbanov before the Lord Regent of the Kingdom. They are noble warriors who have served the Crown in a way that is beyond all imagination, an integral part of the Haeseni people who should be welcomed back with open arms.

If one should see a Volik on the streets of Reza, I would suggest that they should try to make him or her feel comfortable. While the Voliks might be culturally different from the Haeseni, take heart, for we all worship the same GOD, and they too swear allegiance to the Crown of Haense.

In short, the Voliks are just like you and I, but have paid a great price to ensure the safeguarding of Haense’s heritage, far greater than that of any other clan or House within the Kingdom. It is quite apparent that despite their origins, they are, to be sure, true Haensemen through and through.

THE HOLY SCROLLS INTERPRETED

18052addcbef9f279c0c0a0b569b47a5.png
High Pontiff James II
circa. 1753

After centuries upon centuries of exhaustive interpretation done by holy scribes and clerical members, his Holiness High Pontiff James II has officially given a layman interpretation of GOD’s Holy scrolls with help from the works of Cardinal Fabian ‘the lesser’ and St. Daniel ‘the reader’. The original language the scrolls were written in is the  ancient flexio, said to be spoken by aenguls, daemons, and GOD himself. The Holy scrolls were given to the four exalted by GOD; The Exalted Horen and the Scroll of Virtue, The Exalted Owyn and the Scroll of Spirit, The Exalted Godfrey and the Scroll of Gospel, and The Exalted Sigismund and the Scroll of Auspice. The Holy Scrolls are the basis of our faith and the cornerstone of the Canonist church, without them we would be no different from the heretic savages and apostates from Rubern. With this interpretation, we finally have the ability to read the scrolls without a clerical background and come closer to Godan. This is a monumental step in modernizing the mother church as well as bringing on a Great Awakening in the faith. In the coming months, expect a revival in the church all around the Empire with masses being held once again, as well as other jovial festivities around our faith. GOD is coming back into our Holy Empire! The authors applaud the work of his Holiness as he blazes a trail for the future of the canonist church and rejuvenates the once empty cathedrals.

A STEP CLOSER TO PEACE

The Holy Orenian Empire
the Holy Orenian Empire flag

Though the war rages on, peace seems nearer now than ever before. The Rexdom of Krugmar, the Caliphate, Talon’s Grotto, and the Kingdom of Renelia have officially made peace with the empire, exiting the Alliance of Independent States. Soon after the announcement of peace between the aforementioned nations, the Kingdom of Suffonia was dissolved, known for having the largest rally in the AIS. Even more recently announced is the exit of the nefarious orchestrators of the Rubern War, Morsgrad. The Morsgradi have officially made peace with the empire, taking the blame for the abhorrent decisions of their putrid leader Duke Godric ‘the defeated’ as they finally bend the knee to the Empire. This is a devastating, terminal  blow to the Alliance as five of their active members and the founder of the alliance have abandoned them. As the attrition of war kicks in, the Savage hordes of Rubern are heavily depleted. It has been months since the spotting of a raiding party as the Brotherhood of Saint Karl and Imperial State Army have heroically subdued the futile attempts of the AIS to muster any type of rally. We the authors applaud the work of the Basrid Ministry and the Haeseni government as it takes steps to end this burdensome conflict. “The day we raze rubern to the ground is near! We will finish the fight!” exclaims the Lord Regent Otto Sigmar in a statement to the noble peerage. The end of this war is coming, Stand strong Haensemen, Ave Haense!

HISTORICAL FIGURE OF THE YEAR
Prinze Georg Alimar
Lord Palatine of Haense
Haeseni Prince

Mural of Lord Palatine, Georg Alimar c.1719

Georg Alimar (the Elder, not to be confused with his nephew Georg the Younger, Palatin XXV) (Common: George Alimar) was a Haeseni prinze and statesman, who served as the second Lord Speaker of the Royal Duma. During the last year of King Marius II’s reign and in the early accession of King Andrik III, he served as the Lord Palatine and Lord Regent of the realm. He led the government in the final stages of the War of Two Emperors in which Haense stood alone abandoned by its allies. He  coordinated the defenses of the southern borders of Haense and maintained the realm following Marius II’s untimely assassination. However, following conflicts between himself and nobleman Lerald Vyronov, he was captured when enroute to his country estate by enemy soldiers of the Pertinaxi dynasty and subsequently assassinated.
